I plant a variety of sunflowers but my favorites are the ones so dark they’re almost black. I started painting this one outside, standing among the swaying heads heavy with seeds. But after Hurricane Debbie swept through and toppled the garden, I pivoted, bringing a few of the blooms inside to continue the work.
