This cluster of thistles growing through the fence was the inspiration that had me dragging a canvas out to the back yard. This canvas was ambitiously large compared to the panels I see plein aire painters using, but I wanted to be able to work big and loose. Layering charcoal and acrylic, splattering and scraping, using squeegees and palette knives as much as brushes.
