As photos and videos of police brutality against protesters began to be shared widely across the internet, I started sketching figure/gesture studies of these assailants. The wind-up before the baton strike, the gleam of riot gear. In one video, a woman is detained, groped, and when she resists this sexual violence, is assaulted with batons by multiple officers. Her figure, folded into a self-protective ball while handcuffed, is the nucleus around which this piece developed.
